Group Couch to 5km will be coming to Winterslow soon

Questions and Answers:

Q: Where and what time?

A: All C25K sessions will start from the Winterslow Rec car park on a Wednesday night at 18:30.

Q: How fit do I have to be?

A: This course is aimed at the complete beginner with no running experience. As a guide ideally you will need to be able to walk for 30 minutes without stopping and we suggest that, prior to the course, you do get out walking 2 or 3 times a week as preparation. Don’t worry about the running, as long as you can walk you will be fine with the gradual progression to running.

Q: How much time does it take?

A: The Wednesday night meeting will last no longer than 45 minutes. In addition to this the coaching schedule asks you to run twice more each week in your own time. Each session ranges from 20 minutes up to 40 minutes.

Q: What does it cost?

A: The course will cost £40.00

Q: What do I get for my money?

A: A huge sense of achievement, meet some great people and hopefully have a bit of fun along the way. The course will be led by a qualified coach. You will get a full training schedule, meet every Wednesday for a coaching session and online assistance. Once you complete the course you are encouraged to join in with the other fitness sessions or Winterslow running group.

Q: Will it be hard?

A: The course takes you through the process at a pace that you can cope with and, unlike so many training programs, it doesn’t leave you feeling exhausted at the end of each session. In fact, the 5K training program could be called a walking and jogging program, as it allows you to vary the pace to suit your fitness levels. There will be odd times that it may appear hard, but at the end of each session the feeling of satisfaction will be the thing that you will remember.

Q: Is C25K for me?

A: Couch to 5K is for everyone. Whether you’ve never run before or if you want to get back into being more active, Couch to 5K is an easy way of getting fitter and healthier. If you have any health concerns about beginning an exercise regime such as Couch to 5K, make an appointment to see your GP first and discuss it with them.

Q: What are the benefits?

A: There are plenty of benefits from getting into running. For starters, it’s an easy way of improving your physical health. Running regularly will improve the health of your heart and lungs. It can also help you lose weight, especially if combined with a healthy diet. There is evidence it may help increase bone density in some people, which can help protect against bone diseases such as osteoporosis. There are also mental benefits of running. Taking on the challenge of Couch to 5K can help boost your confidence and self-belief, as you prove that you can set yourself a target and achieve a goal. Running regularly can also be a great stress reliever and has even been shown to combat depression. You will meet new people and make friends. Training as part of a group is much more successful than going it alone, remember you will have a qualified coach with you all the way and you will be surrounded by other people just like you, all are reaching for the same goal. We could go on with this list but come along and find out for yourselves.

Q: What gear do I need?

A: A good pair of running trainers, loose comfortable clothing, various thin layers are ideal as you may get a bit hot, waterproof jacket (it’s bound to rain at least once), hat, gloves and a high vis vest or jacket when the nights get darker. some reviews of the couch to 5km course
Thank you so much Darren for 10 weeks of encouragement. you've pushed us all and I cant believe I've actually completed the course and can jog/walk 5km. I would highly recommend this course to anyone regardless of skill level. I couldn't jog for 2 minutes in the first week and now I can complete a 5km distance. Looking forward to continuing under your guidance at Winterslow Running Club!Clare

Never thought I would enjoy running rather than enduring it! Great group and a great place to run too!Really pleased with the progress we’ve all made - wouldn’t have been possible without your guidance and initiative in the first place or without the support of the group from week to week. Strongly recommend this as a way to get from couch to 5K! Looking forward to continuing the journey too!Claire

We started 9 th September and tonight 4 th November we realized what we have achieved under the leadership of one man , thank you Darren , we will have better lives due to you . In future we will worry less and run more , thank you
Paul

I honestly never thought that I would be able to run for more than 5 minutes, let alone run 5k and actually enjoy it, so thank you Darren. This course has given me the motivation I needed to keep pushing myself. I am now looking forward to continuing my training with the running group.Joanne

Thank you from me too. I have really enjoyed the course despite being plagued by injuries and am glad that I reached my goal in the end! It has been fun running in a group, much more enjoyable than on your own. Hopefully see you at the Monday sessions Nicola
